Race of the Champions - Immediately following the presentation of the Webelos II awards, we will start the Race of the Champions. The top three Winners from the Tigers, Wolves, Bears, Webelos I and Webelos II Dens (15 total cars) will race to determine the fastest car in the District. This should take approximately 20 minutes.

Grudge match (open racing) - We will open the track to open racing following the Race of Champions. All cars in the open race must follow the same rules as the Cub Scout races. You may register the cars at anytime during the day, but must be registered by the conclusion of the Race of Champions.

While we realize that everyone's schedules may not allow it, we encourage all of the Scouts to be present during all of the other Den Races. Nothing is better than having lots of Scouts cheer on all of the cars, even when their cars aren't racing.

Narrative for the Parents and the Boys:
BE SAFE!
The Pinewood Derby is all about having fun. However, the fun quickly disappears when someone gets hurt (IT CAN HAPPEN!). Make safety your #1 rule. The list below outlines some general rules, which should be followed by all Cub Scouts:
1. Wear eye protection at all times.
2. Children should not use power tools without adult supervision, some power tools (band saws, grinders) should not be used by children at all.
3. Wear a breathing mask when appropriate - when sanding, painting, or applying lots of graphite.
4. Wear gloves when using sharp tools.
5. Do not wear loose fitting clothing around power tools.
6. Do not use melted lead for weights! Lead without being melted is dangerous ~ enough. Melted lead is EXTREMELY hot and poisonous. When and if you use lead, wash your hands after each time touching the lead.
7. Be sure to follow all safety rules and precautions listed on tools and products.
8. Keep your work area clean and organized - the cleaner the better to avoid accidents.

REMEMBER THAT A GOOD SCOUT IS SAFE AND WILL KEEP HIS WORK AREAS CLEAN!

A SCOUT IS TRUSTWORTHY
When you compete in the Pinewood Derby, do so honestly. Follow your local rules. If you want to try something that you're concerned might not be legal, ask your Den Leader or the Cub Master, BEFORE you get too far into building the car. Be honest! It is the Scouting way.

THIS IS THE SCOUT'S CAR
The Pinewood Derby is more than just winning or losing. It's a time for your Scout to learn building skills, use tools, and develop a stronger relationship with his adult role model. Don't rob them of this opportunity. Take the time to teach the Scout at each of the steps through the building of the car. While adults will DEFINITELY need to help the Scouts complete their cars, there are plenty of times where the Scouts can do A LOT of the work, such as:
1. Let the Scout design the car - While you may know aerodynamics and help him to understand it, he needs to feel that he has a hand in designing the car.
2. Let the Scout pick the color and detail options (stickers, objects)
3. WITH ADULT HELP, let the Scout do some sanding, drilling, gluing, painting, weighting of the car, checking the scale weight, and applying graphite.

Racing information:
1. It is recommended that each Scout put his car in a protective box (shoe box) for the transportation to the races. Nothing is worse than a car damaged at the last minute, after all of the work put in to it.
2. Race Format will be determined, based on the number of Scouts entered in each den and the type of track that we use. We will explain the format prior to the start of each Den Race. Please understand that our intent is to have the Scouts race as much as possible during their Den Races.
3. There will be a "racing pit" area, where the Scouts/parents can work on their cars to get the right weight, wheels fixed, loose pieces secured, etc. There will be some tools available for you to use, but you may want to be prepared by bringing some of your own tools and accessories (weights, lubricant, and glue).
4. Registration Fees for racing are Two Cans of Food PER SCOUT. These cans will go towards our Scouting for Food community project. The Scout is to bring the cans and drop them off with the Registration officials when he registers his car.
5. For the car to be entered in the races, the Scout must present his car to the registration officials prior to his den’s races. The car must not exceed 5.00 ounces. The car must also fit inside the official racing dimension box. The car must also meet the following regulations:
a. The car must be made new for these races - no cars from previous races. .
b. The Scout must have worked on the car, with the help of his parent, guardian, leader or other adult.
c. The car must be from be made from Official Grand Prix Pinewood Derby car kits - wood, wheels, and axles. If you have to replace anything, it should be with acceptable replacement parts.
d. Springs, wheel bearings, washers, bushings, motors, rubber bands, and hubcaps are not allowed.
e. No starting devices or other types of propulsion can be used.
f. No liquids or loose materials are allowed.
g. All lubricants must be of a "dry type" - graphite or powdered Teflon. No oils or liquid lubricants.
h. The only modifications that can be done to the wheels is that they may be sanded to get the burrs off the wheels you may not round the treads of the wheels. They must keep the same general shape that they have when you receive them in the box.
i. BSA approved “after-market” colored wheels may be used.
j. The car must have a minimum of a wooden body, 4 axles, and 4 wheels.
The dimension requirements must meet the following:
i. The overall length of the car should not be longer than 7 inches.
ii. The overall height of the car and accessories should not be higher than 3" if it gets too high, it will hit the finish line.
iii. The wheels should not be set inside the body of the car and they should be no closer together than the original width of the car body.
iv. Total width may not exceed 2 ¾ inches
iv. The bottom of the car should be at least 3/8" above the hard surface the car is sitting on.
v. Most of these dimensions and other dimensions can be found on the directions furnished in your PWD kit.
6. If your car does not meet the requirements at the initial inspection during registration, you can go to the Racing Pit area to modify the car and bring it back for final inspection.
7. All cars should be lubricated BEFORE they are turned in for final inspection. Once the cars are turned in for final inspection, they cannot be re-lubricated, unless there is damage during the races.
8. Once the car has passed final inspection, is registered, and has been retained by the racing officials, it cannot be retrieved by the Scouts. It will be set to the side to wait for the racing.
9. The Scouts, friends, and family members should stay clear of the track. During their races, each Scout will be allowed to get up next to the track.
10. In the event of a breakdown during the races; the Scout will be given a few minutes to repair the damaged portions only. He can do the repairs with or without adult help. The car will be re-inspected by the racing officials and then the race will be run again. If the repairs cannot be made within a few minutes, the car will be placed "last" in that race. If the car breaks down a second time, the car will be disqualified.
11. If a car jumps off the track or leaves its lane and interferes with another car, then that race will be run again. If this happens again to the same car during the re-race, then that car will be placed "last" in that race.
12. The cars will be held until the completion of the Den Races. During this time, the Scouts, leaders and parents will be given the chance to vote on several different awards for each of the cars. After the Den Races, the cars will be given back to the Scouts. Awards will be presented immediately following each Den Race.
13. The Pack may appoint a substitute Cub Scout to be a proxy racer if the owner of a District PWD race car is unable to attend the race.

We will be offering a Pancake & Sausage breakfast from 9am to 11am for $5.00 per plate. This will include a beverage of choice (including coffee).
Hot dogs, Snacks and drinks will be sold at the concession area (including coffee) for the entire race. There will be a designating Eating Area. Please keep all food and drink confined to this area. (Can you tell I really like coffee?)

As the District rules say - The intent of these rules is to be as complete as possible. However, not every contingency may be addressed here. And, in those cases where these rules do not cover the situation, please remember that the Pack Officials will make the final decision. Everyone is reminded that the spirit of the race is in the competition, camaraderie, and fun. As adults, we MUST set good examples for our children during these races. Remember that some boys will not win much, some cars might fall apart, and some boys will not receive trophies. It is up to us, as parents, to encourage the Scouts if they don't win, AND to encourage the other Scouts to be graceful winners!

Thank you and HAPPY RACING!
